To be an eligible candidate for this scholarship, students must be:

  • In the final year of study at the University of Adelaide – Enrolled in the Bachelor of Oenology
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Aged between 21 and 35


Criteria

To meet the required criteria for this scholarship, students must:

  • Have a sound academic record (credit average or above is preferable)
  • Be experienced or qualified in some facet of winery operation (cellar, lab, vineyard)
  • Aspire to be a leader in the Australian wine industry
  • Be interested in the U.S or European wine industries
  • Be interested in discussing wine making techniques with others from wine regions throughout the world
  • Be curious about what life is like in another country
  • Be eager to include training at a premium winery on your C.V
  • Possess excellent communication skills

As part of the application process, students will need to:

  • Write an essay outlining their goals and aspirations associated with their future in the wine industry (min 750 words – max 1000 words).
  • If short-listed, participate in an interview with a panel of representatives from the respective University and the CEO of The Wine Society.


The Scholarship

  • The Dr. Gilbert Phillips Scholarship is named after the founder of The Wine Society.
  • The scholarship offers an outstanding student the opportunity to experience a year’s vintage overseas, upon the completion of their degree.
  • The Wine Society will cover all major costs of the trip including a Visa, airfares and travellers insurance. The recipient will be paid by the winery they are placed at. It will be enough to live on, but the recipient should be prepared to fund any additional costs themselves.
  • The travel/working details of the internship will be organised by Bibber International, who are aiding The Wine Society with their services for the purpose of this scholarship.
  • The recipient of the scholarship will be required to give a short speech at a Wine Society event once the internship has been completed.
